You probably know (from the Musical!) that Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were political archenemies, and that their duel resulted in Hamilton’s death….

But did you know that the duel occurred on July 11, 1804 in New Jersey and that Hamilton is buried in Trinity Churchyard, located in downtown New York City?

And did you know that Trinity Church is not far from The New York Law Institute ?

You probably know that Aaron Burr served as Thomas Jefferson’s Vice President.

But did you know that future President Andrew Jackson killed Charles Dickinson in a duel. Dickinson made the fatal errors of insulting Jackson’s wife.

Kentucky Courts did not prosecute Jackson for murder, and the duel had little effect on Jackson’s successful campaign for the Presidency in 1829,

1802 Kentucky Laws against duelling….

So now you know that a U.S. Vice President (Burr), and a future President (Jackson) both killed men in duels….

But did you know that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Henry Brockholst Livingston (1757-1823) participated in a 1798 duel that killed James Jones.

I hope you do know that NYLI members have access to eBooks, Records & Briefs, print, LLMC, ProQuest Congressional and the expert Research assistance of our ever helpful librarians.

I’d say that membership is essential to anyone researching legal matters. I’m not about to fight a duel over proving NYLI’s worth, but instead just ask you to explore a membership by clicking here!
