Regarded as a definitive legal authority, Black’s Law Dictionary was first published in 1861. Author Henry Campbell Black’s original preface describes the work as “a concise and yet comprehensive book of definitions of the terms, phrases, and maxims used in American law…necessary to be understood by the working lawyer and judge, as well as student…”.
Now in it’s 12th edition and edited by legal scholar Bryan Garner, it should be noted that Henry Campbell Black’s intention has been fulfilled for over 100 years as approximately 250 U.S. Supreme Court cases have cited Black’s Law Dictionary.
And NYLI now has the honor of having an autographed copy of the latest edition of Black’s. NYLI’s Technical Services Librarian Eileen Dolan entered a drawing at the 2024 AALL conference. and won a copy Black’s Law Dictionary (12th Edition) inscribed by editor Bryan Garner.
