“Dog Days of Summer” phrase goes back to Ancient times, when Sirius the “dog star” and the brightest star visible from the earth, was credited with being responsible for the season’s hottest days. Sirius aligns itself with the sun on July 23rd; the 20 days before and after the alignment became termed by the Romans as diēs caniculārēs (“dog days”).
In 2022, “Dog Days” still captures the Summer doldrums of relentless heat… especially here in NYC, where it seems that even the sidewalks generate humidity…
