This workshop is intended to be a cataloging overview that focuses on the basics of the craft, with special attention to the subject area of law and legal materials. As some library and information science programs no longer have a course in beginner cataloging, we wanted to offer it as a function of our professional association. This workshop will include a breakdown of the Library of Congress KF Classification schedule, law-related Library of Congress Subject Headings and subdivisions, construction of statements of responsibility, management of serials, MARC21 basics, and batch-loading basics.

Target Audience:

New and experienced catalogers alike will benefit from this workshop.

It will appeal to newer catalogers and technical services staff who have not had formal training in legal resources cataloging. Experienced catalogers who would like to update their skills will find this workshop to be an excellent opportunity. Catalogers who are working alone would gain valuable day-to-day expertise in their position, and have the opportunity to build their connections with fellow catalogers and potential mentors. All attendees will benefit from the instruction provided by our presenters who are experts in the field. It would be ideal for the attendee to have basic cataloging knowledge, but not necessarily for legal materials.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to immediately and confidently apply newfound knowledge to catalog legal materials using best practices, RDA guidelines, and essential cataloging resources like ClassWeb Plus.
  • Participants will be able to resolve unique legal cataloging issues in-house, catalog monographs and serials, address cataloging backlogs, perform e-resource batch loading, and recognize common errors that can lead to bigger problems.
  • Participants will be able to evaluate commercially produced MARC records before loading them into their ILS or discovery platform.
